About the Author

Author, poet and illustrator Oodgeroo (formerly known as Kath Walker) of the tribe Noonuccal was born in 1920 on North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, where she lived and worked for most of her life. For many years she was active on behalf of the Aboriginal people in many parts of the world. She died in 1993. Other published works by Oodgeroo include We are Going (poetry, 1964), The Dawn is at Hand (poetry, 1966), and Stradbroke Dreamtime (stories, 1972).
